The Minneriya Gathering — why, when and how to see it

October 20, 2026 · 1 min read

Every dry season, hundreds of elephants gather on the beds of the Minneriya and Kaudulla tanks — one of the largest gatherings of Asian elephants anywhere, known as 'The Gathering'.

Why does it happen?

By July the small tanks and streams of the dry zone dry up. As water in big ancient tanks like Minneriya recedes, fresh grass grows on the exposed bed. With water and food in one place, herds come in from the surrounding forests.

When?

Usually July to October, peaking in August–September; it shifts with the rains. On some days the elephants are at Minneriya, on others at Kaudulla — ask a driver before you go.

Best time of day

Elephants start coming onto the tank bed after about 3 pm, and the late light is best for photos.

Remember

  • Keep away from herds with calves — mothers may charge.
  • Stay in the jeep and never feed elephants.
