Snake identification guide

Most of Sri Lanka’s snakes are harmless, and many are endemic. A small number are dangerously venomous — the Indian cobra, Russell’s viper, common krait, saw-scaled viper, Ceylon krait and hump-nosed vipers. Learn to recognise them, wear shoes and use a torch at night, and never try to catch or kill a snake: most bites happen that way.
